Strapless Kite Surfing – The Tricks of the Trade

Surfboarding without the aid of any extra fittings or attachments gives you the experience of a lifetime. You experience ultimate freedom with the most exciting form of kiteboarding, the strapless kitesurfing. However, everything has a negative side; all joy doesn’t come easily as strapless kitesurfing has a few disadvantages along with challenges and obstacles that you will need to fight against. There is nothing that a little hard work, time and experience cannot conquer.

Make sure you pull out all your tricks while staying glued to the board. Never let go of the board when launching into the air, taking sharp turns or performing hard maneuvers. This is the first rule you need to adhere to strictly. Balancing the body is of utmost importance, and foot straps are used for this purpose. With strapless kite surfing, you can do without foot straps that prevent free movement of the feet. Without the foot straps, we would need to learn how to balance perfectly to avoid untoward incidents. The most important thing you need to master is the positioning of the front foot. Once you can get the central aspect right, you can be sure that the vital safety aspect of strapless kitesurfing has been covered.

The Front to Back Positioning

The foot has to be positioned front to back when you need a wide stance. This is required so that your weight can be kept forward, somewhere around the wider mid-section of the board. Placing your foot in the place of where the foot strap should be is a start. Experience can help you play with the positioning which is when you can experiment by moving your weight a bit backward and forward to see what works best for you.

When You Have to Position Your Foot from Side to Side

You have multiple options when it comes to angling your foot when you go strapless. The angle depends on what maneuver you are going to perform. The side to side position may keep you closer to the rail, gives you a better angle and thereby providing with a better chance to edge. However, it makes for a hard rail to tail movement. It improves edge to edge control but does not provide ability in extreme edging. In a nutshell, the moment you find your lengthways position you wouldn’t want to deviate too much but on the other hand, your side to side position can be tweaked as per your comfort.


The Position of the Back Foot

It is common knowledge that you need to put your weight over the front foot because riding a surfboard requires this. The position makes it easy to keep shifting your back foot to adjust the board. Moving your back foot forward will help with lighter winds and moving it backward will allow maximum control of the board. Cruising upwind usually requires the middle position in between backward and forward which is the most comfortable spot. Often, this position is somewhere at the front of the tail pad. Making note of the positioning of the back foot towards the back of the pad helps with the turns being adequately powered.
